Smuggling goods between England and Sweden was not uncommon in the 19th Century. In the English town Hastings, smugglers were a big problem and the place is still full of secret passageways, tunnels and caves. After one fishingboat was found to have a false bottom, all seized boats were ”sawn asunder amidships”. These boat halves were often made to shacks for fishermen to live in.
So what has this to do with Göteborg? A lot. One of the most beastly murders in Haga in Göteborg includes English smugglers and secret hiding places. And a woman who claimed the devil helped her to protect her smuggled bounty. ⠀
Come with us on a Crime Walk in English through the narrow streets of Haga, Göteborg. Starting on the 27th April.
